Accepting more than one currency

How currency is decided, how to set up a switcher, and the mismatch that silently costs you sales.

Professional / Premium 1.0 3 August 2026

If Scotiabank has enabled more than one currency on your merchant account, you can accept them all on the same store.

How it works

The plugin sends the currency of the order to the gateway along with the amount. The bank accepts it if that currency is enabled on your account, and rejects the transaction if it is not. The plugin does not convert anything and does not set exchange rates.

This means the currencies available to you are entirely determined by your merchant account configuration. If you need a currency the bank has not enabled, the fix is a conversation with the bank, not a setting in the plugin.

Setting it up

  1. Confirm with Scotiabank which currencies are enabled on your account.
  2. Install a WooCommerce currency switcher plugin. The gateway works with the standard ones, since they change the order currency through WooCommerce itself.
  3. Configure the switcher to offer only the currencies the bank has enabled.
  4. Test a transaction in each currency before going live.

The mistake to avoid

Do not offer a currency in your switcher that the bank has not enabled. The customer will get through checkout, enter their card, and be declined with a generic error. They will assume their card was refused and many will not try again.

Match the switcher to the account exactly.

Pricing considerations

Some currencies in the region are pegged to the US dollar, which makes dual pricing predictable. Others float, so if you hard-code prices in a second currency rather than converting at a live rate, review them periodically.
